Minnepolis Orchestra Hall — April, 2004

Created to honor the 100th anniversary of the first Nobel Peace Prize, Minnesota native Steve Heitzeg’s ambitious “Nobel
Symphony” was commissioned by Gustavus Adolphus College. This monumental work for massed adult and children’s
choirs, soloists and symphony orchestra was premiered shortly after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
Steve Heitzeg’s mission to promote peace, human rights and justice drives his musical vision. He based each of the six
movements of the Nobel Symphony on a different Nobel prize and compiled texts from the writing of Nobel Laureates
Toni Morrison, Albert Camus, Mother Theresa, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Elie Wiesel, Nelson Mandela and Aleksandr
Solzhenitsyn for the work.

VocalEssence partnered with the Minneapolis College of Art and Design to produce a complex visual, interactive
interpretation of the Nobel Symphony. A group of students worked with a variety of disciplines including design, video,
film, photography, motion graphics, animation and sound, providing a new richness to the symphony.
